The character of the IPS Officer was reportedly inspired by the life of Kiran Bedi and?Kanchan Chaudhary Bhattacharya was played by Kavita Chaudhary, the actress you might remember from Surf ads. As she left for heavenly abode today after suffering from a heart attack, the grief has taken over the entire entertainment industry.?
Kavita as Kalyani showed us how to combine courage with self-doubt and strength with vulnerability. She was an inspiration for all of us.?
Shekhar Kapur who played the male lead?Harish Menon in the show which was also written and directed by Kavita took to Twitter to write, "Shocking news of demise of Kavita Chaudhary. She created Udaan, one of the most inspirational series of her time. So many women now in high positions in Indian Civil Services come to me and say they were inspired by Udaan. She was an amazing director."
Her close friend Anang Desai told ETimes, "Her treatment was going on but her nephew told me that she passed away due to cardiac arrest". Desai who was a classmate with her from the National School of Drama added that she deserved more recognition than she got.
Another friend Amit Behl who was Kavita's junior in the National School of Drama told the publication, "She was a great human, great actor and producer. This is now just a human loss but also the loss of the film fraternity."
The actress was battling poor health for a long time. Some reports suggest she was suffering from Cancer. She passed away in Parvati Devi Hospital in Amritsar where she was being treated. Her last rites were performed on Friday morning.?
Udaan was based on the life of her sister Kanchan Chaudhary Bhattacharya, who became the second IPS officer after Kiran Bedi. Kavita inspired a lot of young women as at the time there was very little female representation in the police force. Udaan gained immense popularity and made her a household name. The show was re-telecast on Doordarshan during COVID-19 pandemic.
