A tiger never changes its stripes - Abhishek Bachchan mouths this dialogue throughout his recently released film Dasvi.
This resonates in real life for his fans. Acting is in his blood and he¡¯s relentless in his pursuits. Far from the hue and cry about nepotism, one star kid who didn¡¯t get his due was Abhishek Bachchan until recently.
Having made his debut in the year 2000 with JP Dutta¡¯s Refugee, he was under the spotlight from the word go. After all he was the successor of the Shahenshah of Bollywood, Amitabh Bachchan. Scrutiny came as a part and parcel with his loaded surname.
If you take a look at his filmography, AB Junior has done some commendable work but he remained underrated. To match up to his father was a big challenge which he took head on but the output wasn¡¯t up to the mark. Many wrote him off. Some troll him even today. They say that he¡¯ll remain under the shadows of his legendary father. However, the humble and polite actor is known for his classy replies even to those who are busy slinging mud at him.
Without taking a deep dive into his long filmography, for many cinegoers including myself, Abhishek Bachchan achieved a milestone with Anurag Kashyap¡¯s Manmarziyan. In 2018, he carved a new niche for himself and audiences got to witness his great potential as a serious actor.
With digital platforms taking precedence especially during the unprecedented times of the pandemic, we saw Abhishek Bachchan making his big debut in the world of web series with Breathe: Into the Shadows. He played a father to a six-year-old who has multiple personality disorder. We all witnessed a new side to him and some even declared that he had finally found his true calling.
Post the series, Abhishek Bachchan managed to sweep us off our feet once again with the portrayal of a broken man who lost his family due to his vices and made a comeback to tread on the path of repentance in Anurag Basu¡¯s Ludo.
He then got to play the role of stock scammer Harshad Mehta in the movie The Big Bull. Unfortunately for him, Pratik Gandhi had already planted his flag with the super hit series Scam 1992. However, Bachchan¡¯s performance was hailed by fans and critics alike.
Then came Bob Biswas, a spin-off on the character from Vidya Balan¡¯s Kahaani which was originally played by senior bengali actor Saswata Chatterjee. Initially, the internet didn¡¯t take too kindly to the idea of Abhishek playing Bob Biswas as the character was already well established by Chatterjee. While the movie lacked in terms of plot, Abhishek Bachchan more than made up for it with his captivating performance. Some even called it one of his career best performances.
What made the film strike a chord with the audiences is the fact that in a long time a movie shed light on the importance of education. Bachchan playing a semi-literate corrupt politician who embraces education as a bet and eventually understands the importance of it was so wholesome to watch that we fell in love with him all over again. Be it his Haryanvi accent, his subtle comedy or his profound and in-depth acting, Abhishek won the day once again.
Which brings us back to our original claim, OTTs have definitely helped Abhishek Bachchan up his acting game. Not that he hasn¡¯t done phenomenal work on the big screen but with digital, he has managed to win way more hearts as people got to witness his true potential from close quarters.? ? ?
