Johnny Depp Gets Back At Amber Heard, Files To Appeal $2 Million Verdict Awarded To Her

Relentless in her efforts, Amber Heard has started a new fight to challenge the verdict in a case against her ex-husband, Johnny Depp.?On Thursday, Heard filed a notice of appeal against her ex-husband, Johnny Depp's, USD 10 million defamation verdict.

Variety claims that Heard's attorneys had declared they would file an appeal as soon as the jury concluded on June 1 that she had slandered Depp by posting an opinion piece in the Washington Post in which she referred to herself as a "public figure representing domestic abuse."

The jury held that the statement was false and was made with "actual malice."

Heard's spokesperson said on Thursday: "We believe the court made errors that prevented a just and fair verdict consistent with the First Amendment."

They added, "We are therefore appealing the verdict. While we realize today’s filing will ignite the Twitter bonfires, we need to take steps to ensure fairness and justice."

The two-paragraph notice does not spell out the grounds for Heard’s appeal.

In response, Depp’s representative said his team remains confident the verdict will be upheld. "We remain confident in our case and that this verdict will stand," his spokesperson said.

Johnny Depp has followed in Amber Heard's footsteps by filing a notice of appeal in response to the verdict awarding her $2 million in the actor's defamation lawsuit against Heard.

New court documents obtained by ET state that the Pirates of the Caribbean actor's legal team filed the papers on Friday in Fairfax County, Virginia. The move came?just one day after the Aquaman actress' initial notice of appeal of the June 1 verdict.

The jury awarded Depp USD 15 million in damages, but Heard had to pay USD 10.35 million due to a Virginia law limiting punitive damages (the judge reduced the amount).

In her countersuit, Heard won one of the three defamation counts and was awarded USD 2 million in damages.

Heard's attorneys had earlier argued for the decision to be overturned before Judge Penney Azcarate for several reasons, including the claim that one of the jurors had attended the trial despite never having been summoned.

According to a report in Variety, Azcarate denied Heard’s request, finding that she had waited too long to raise her objection and had not shown she was denied a fair trial.?
