The director of "Barbie" has finally broken her silence after not being nominated for the Best Directing award at the 2024 Oscars.?
In a recent interview, Greta Gerwig opened up about her exclusion from the Oscar Best Director category, responding with quiet grace despite the disappointment.
Gerwig secured a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay, but the absence of a Best Director nod left many fans expressing their discontent.
Instead, the Academy recognized other directors for notable films. Justine Triet received acknowledgment for "Anatomy of a Fall," Martin Scorsese for "Killers of the Flower Moon," Christopher Nolan for "Oppenheimer," Yorgos Lanthimos for "Poor Things," and Jonathan Glazer for "The Zone of Interest."
Gerwig shared with TIME in an article published on February 21, recalling, "A friend's mom said to me, ¡®I can't believe you didn't get nominated.'"
Fans were equally miffed as Gerwig's lead actor and producer, Margot Robbie, received only a Best Picture nomination, missing out on the Best Lead Actress category.
Expressing her perspective on Robbie's exclusion, Gerwig states, "Of course, I wanted it for Margot, but I'm just happy we all get to be there together," showcasing a positive outlook.
In contrast to Gerwig's measured response, collaborators like Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera, and Robbie herself have expressed disappointment and highlighted Gerwig's crucial role in the film's success.
Despite the snubs, "Barbie" made history as the first-ever billion-dollar movie directed by a solo woman, competing for the Best Picture award against Christopher Nolan¡¯s ¡°Oppenheimer¡± at the upcoming Oscars.
The 2024 Oscars, where "Barbie" is in the running for Best Picture, will be on ABC on March 10. It starts at 7 p.m. Eastern Time (ET) or 4 p.m. Pacific Time (PT). You can watch it live from the fancy Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood.?
