Bollywood might be going through a lull phase but a fire has been raging in the West. All eyes are on the ongoing trial of Johnny Depp¡¯s 50 million-dollar defamation suit against former wife Amber Heard. ?
For the unversed, Depp had sued Heard after she wrote an op-ed for The Washington Post, where she called herself ¡®a public figure representing domestic abuse¡¯.
Johnny Depp had lost the libel lawsuit against The Sun in November 2021 and went back to the court for a defamation suit claiming that Heard isn¡¯t telling the truth and that has ruined his career.
?Heard has counter-sued Depp alleging that he ¡°defamed her when his former lawyer released statements saying her allegations of abuse were a hoax.¡±
In the light of the ongoing row, Johnny Depp had to pay a heavy price when he was dropped by Warner Bros from The Fantastic Beast franchise. Disney also fired him from his iconic role of Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
Parallely, even Amber Heard has said that she has lost out on a lot of projects including Aquaman.
The case started with opening statements from both the parties on April 12 and is expected to go before a seven-member jury before Memorial Day i.e. 30th May.
With live footage available on the internet from their hearings, it¡¯s natural for people to scrutinize every inch of what¡¯s been happening and break it down for others to have a full blown discussion. During the course of the trial, several incidents have come to light and unfortunately for Amber most of them are not in her favour. People have extensively called out the Aquaman actress for lying and backtracking from her own statements.?
Here is a consolidated list of incidents that landed the actress in hot soup. Scroll!
At the time of her cross examining, she was presented with numerous photos of herself following incidents of alleged abuse. When asked if she could see any visible signs of injury, Heard responded, "None that you can see."?
She was then asked by Depp's attorney about the lack of visible injuries on Heard's face after she testified to the actor frequently hitting her while wearing rings on his fingers. She shared that she was wearing makeup in several of the photos and used ice to reduce swelling on her injuries.
Many make-up artists and experts vouched for the inaccuracy of her justification. They said that no amount of makeup or ice can completely hide bruises or injuries of the gravity that she has mentioned.
She said, "I'm typically photographed in L.A. when I leave the house, paparazzi type of photographs, so I always, I'm you know somewhat aware of that anyway and no woman wants to walk around with a bruise on her face."
So, if she did have a bruise on her face or somewhere visible, she said it's important to ice it to reduce any swelling and recommended Arnica cream as a "remedy."?
"Then, if you want to cover up a bruise, you obviously put foundation first, concealer and then on top of that, I used like a bruise kit. Not a bruise kit¡ªit's a theater makeup kit, a color correction kit, but I called it my bruise kit."
Things took a turn for the worst when she showed the ¡®bruise kit¡¯ of a brand that went ahead and cleared the air that the product came out in the market much later after the mentioned alleged assault. The timelines just didn¡¯t match. Team Amber then justified the error by saying that it was just a prototype and not necessarily the brand that she would use to hide her bruises.
This is not, obviously, the exact one I used to carry, but I used to carry [one] with me all the time," she said. "The idea is that you want to counteract whatever color you're working with on the bruise. So first day of bruising, well the immediate is red. The red is what shows up right away. So you want to go with the opposite on the color wheel by dabbing on a bit of the green or something to counteract the red."
For the unversed, when Amber Heard received a $7 million divorce settlement from Depp, she had publicly vowed to donate the money to charity including the ACLU and Children's Hospital Los Angeles.
During the trial, Depp¡¯s lawyer argued that she has not yet donated the full amount and has been using the word ¡®pledged¡¯ which is not how donations are paid.
Heard later admitted under oath, "I have not been able to fulfill those obligations yet."?
When asked what has taken so long to donate, Heard said, "I haven't been able to fulfill those pledges because I've been sued." She added that she "didn't want anything" and she "didn't get anything" from the divorce settlement.
When Depp's lawyer countered that she wanted positive publicity from donating, Heard replied, "My motives were being questioned. I did see it as important to clear that up. I wanted to make a statement to make sure there was not any doubt."
What got even more embarrassing was when a representative from the aforementioned charities testified to not receiving the full amount.
Heard denied under oath that she was the one who left feces in Depp's bed in 2016. She then went on to blame the act on Depp's dog Boo.
"She had eaten Johnny's weed when she was a puppy and had bowel control issues for her entire life¡ªamong some other issues. We regularly had to take her to the vet to try to figure out what was wrong with this dog. I've never met a dog that was quite like this," Heard told the jury.
She said that Boo used to burrow in the bed with the couple and sleep with them. Interestingly, the Internet couldn¡¯t help but point out that Depp's dog was a terrier and it¡¯s not possible for such a tiny dog to make such a big dump. What an observation, right?
During her testimony, Heard recalled accusing Depp of cheating on her with a woman he had been with years prior. She said her suspicions came after Depp visited the woman's home.
"I immediately confronted him about it. I didn't care in that moment if he did kill me," she dramatically said.
After yelling obscenities at Depp, Heard went into a neighboring penthouse where her sister Whitney Heard was staying and he followed. At that penthouse, Amber said a physical struggle occurred between the couple.
"I swung at him," Amber said. "In all my relationships to date with Johnny, I hadn't landed a blow...for the first time I hit him, like actually hit him square in the face."
Heard said Depp "looked stunned, and then laughed at me and then he hit me again."
Unknown to many, Amber Heard identifies as a bisexual. She claimed that after attending the 2014 Met Gala, Depp accused her of flirting with another woman. After the couple returned to the hotel post the event, Heard alleged that Depp became violent.
"He threw a bottle at me. It missed me, but it hit the chandelier. At some point, he just whacked me in the face. I was unsure what that feeling was, but I suspected I had a broken nose."
Heard said she later found out her nose was simply bruised. The pictures from the event showed no signs of injuries whatsoever.
She said Johnny swung at her sister Whitney near the staircase and she couldn¡¯t even wait for a second for the tragedy to happen, so she hit him in defense.
When Whitney narrated her side of the story, she said that she was talking to Amber and her back was towards the stairs. That¡¯s when Johnny walked up the stairs, came behind her and struck her on the back. Many twitter users pointed out that it¡¯s practically impossible for her to fall down the stairs like Amber mentioned.
Interestingly, before this incident came up during the trial, Amber maintained that she had never hit Johnny. However, it then changed to ¡®she has hit him once in defense¡¯.
This raised suspicion over which Heard sister is lying and which one is telling the truth!
During her testimony, she was cross examined by Depp¡¯s lawyer about the embarrassing photos of Johnny that she clicked and whether or not she shared them with anyone. She stated that she didn¡¯t think so.
It was then that the lawyer showed a screenshot of Amber¡¯s chat with a friend featuring Johnny¡¯s photo followed by a message - ¡®This is what I am dealing with¡¯.
During Depp¡¯s testimony, the 58-year-old actor alleged that he was abused by his ex-partner multiple times. The Court then heard a recording of Heard and Depp in which the duo could be heard arguing with each other.
Amber can be heard saying, "I didn't punch you... I was hitting you, it was not punching you. You didn't get punched, you got hit... I did not f****** deck you, I f****** was hitting you," the actress can be heard saying. "But you're fine, I did not hurt you... you're a f****** baby. You are such a baby, grow the f*** up, Johnny."
In another clip, she could be heard telling Johnny that he should go public and tell the world that he was abused by her and wait to see how the world would react.
?This toxic saga will soon come to end as the trial is almost near its completion. While it¡¯s wrong to take sides without knowing both the sides of the coin, the blurry picture can be seen clearing up. As far as conducting perjury is concerned, it seems like Amber Heard might have committed it on occasions more than one.
In which direction the verdict will go remains to be seen.?
