The Israel-Hamas conflict was mentioned both for '20 days in Mariupol' and during an acceptance speech for "The Zone of Interest" at the Oscars 2024.?After the movie won the award for best international feature director Jonathan Glazer read his speech in which he thanked his partners before discussing the issue.
¡°All our choices were made to reflect and confront us in the present ¡ª not to say, ¡®Look what they did then,¡¯ rather, ¡®Look what we do now.¡¯ Our film shows where dehumanization leads at its worst. It shaped all of our past and present.¡±
Glazer, who is Jewish, said that he rejected ¡°Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation, which has led to conflict for so many innocent people,¡± he said.
He continued: ¡°Whether the victims of October the seventh in Israel or the ongoing attack on Gaza, all the victims of this dehumanization, how do we resist?
"The Zone of Interest" producer James Wilson also touched on the conflict during one of his acceptance speeches at the BAFTA Film Awards last month. He made reference to the walls that people build in their life during his remarks.
¡°I wish to be able to exchange this for Russia never attacking Ukraine, never invading our cities. I wish to be able to exchange this for Russian not killing 10,000 of my fellow Ukrainians.¡±
?In addition, Chernov expressed his desire to exchange the honor for Russia "releasing the hostages" and "the civilians who are now in their jails."
¡°I cannot change history. I cannot change the past,¡± he concluded. ¡°But we all together, you ¨C some of the most talented people in the world ¨C can make sure the history record is set straight and the truth will prevail and the people of Mariupol and those who have lost their lives will never be forgotten.¡°Because cinema forms memories and memories form history.¡±
¡°Thanks to Ukraine.¡±
