There has been a lot of debate around the film, Kabir Singh ever since it was released. Despite the fame it got for Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani, the movie does get a lot of flak.
We met Kiara and spoke her first break, about how Kabir Singh has affected her career.
Kiara was rejected by lots of directors when she had initially made her debut with Abbas Mustan¡¯s film Machine, it was not an easy journey. "It feels like finally, I am doing the kind of films that I am excited to do, it's just making me more hungry to do better. It's very motivating when directors want to cast you or even talk about your performance. I just want to work now I have had days where I? wanted to be busy, to be working, to be on film sets, I haven't got those opportunities because I wasn't signing films like I am today."
The wait did teach her a few lessons. She says, "I was waiting for these opportunities, it can make you feel a little low but I feel glad that I didn't give up, that I went after the dream. Today I am getting good work,? so the moral of the story is just don't give and if you have talented, just keep growing your craft and be the best.¡±
Kiara added that she feels good when she is known for her characters he shared an incident on how during the promotion of Good Newwz she was called Preeti by the crowd in Chandigarh, Kiara says she aims to make her every character memorable
But she is also aware of the debate around her character Preeti, "How did Kabir Singh become an irresponsible film?? This I don't understand. I understand the debate differing viewpoints, I understand that some people felt very strongly, it¡¯s great that impacted people so much that they literally made a prime time debate. It was a bit shocking at first," she said.
You do realise that certain films will have topics which will be thought-provoking, it's nice to debate, and I think that's a huge thing for a filmmaker where you are leaving the theatre and talking about the film, in itself, it is a big thing. But I did not feel it was an irresponsible film. I looked at it like there was a flawed character, in no way to me Kabir was a hero, and for those who made him a hero, I don't know. But for me, he was never a hero, but a flawed character who's biggest weakness was his love for the girl and that made him do all sorts of things which led to his own doubts.
She further added, ¡°Also there are Kabir and Preeti's in this world and we can't deny it but at the same time this is a fictional story, people have made them suddenly this real-life people and discussing it like we are all telling you to be like Kabir and Preeti, it's just the story of their lives and now it's the end. But whatever happened, happened, as an actor and as a person I have different views in terms of how someone behaves."
Though it is a compliment to be seen closely as the character because you have performed the part well. But this was not as smooth sailing for Kiara. "I am very different from Preeti, it was very challenging for me to play a character like Preeti, but when story connects with you because it is so flawed, so imperfect, there were situations like I thought if I would be Kiara I would have walked off, and not give that person a second chance, but I guess that what love makes you do, at the end you melt when that boy comes and how much ever you are resisting you give a chance. People give marriages the chance, they go through a separation, they come back,? these things happen, this is life,? we are all human?beings?and we are imperfect, and all learn."
She even raised questions on the violence shown in the film, ¡° Nobody is saying it¡¯s right or justified, that character Kabir himself was so zoned out and even Preeti¡¯s character was so wrong, even she whacked him and slapped him at the bus stop, why didn't anyone picked up that point, just because she's a girl? Of course not,? nobody should be violent, but anyway, that is a story which has happened, me as an actor to make myself believe that a character like this exists and I shouldn't judge her actions because I had to play that and if I had allowed my thoughts to interfere the character then you as an audience wouldn't have believed and we would have not got this reaction. So I had to believe her character," Kiara concluded.
We hope the Kabir Singh debate comes to an end after Kiara¡¯s clarification about the film.
