Have you seen Stranger Things Season 4, Volume 1 yet? If you thought Eleven looked a little different in some scenes, fret not you are not hallucinating!
The latest season sees Eleven recall the past, by exploring the memories of Hawkins Lab. The quest leads her to find out more about her old lab orderly "Peter Ballard". Due to the age gap, a stand-in was needed for Millie Bobby Brown to film such scenes.
Eleven's stand-in is played by Martie Blair. Brown coached Blair on how to capture the essence of Eleven as a young girl, who is portrayed at the age of 8 in the series. However, some special effects were needed to make her look the part.
Nowadays, special effects have come so far that actors can be aged down and their appearance changed for films in post-production. To age an actor down on the screen, the creators use a stand-in actor to be made older. Superimposed with the original version of the actor, this makes it seem as though they're both on-screen at the same time.
One unfortunate consequence of using facial mapping technology is that Eleven often gives off the uncanny valley vibe. This gets confusing when old Eleven and young Eleven interact.?Sometimes they are both included in the scene. On top of this, old footage of Bobby Brown's original Eleven scenes appears to be used at times, strengthening the uncanny valley moments.
Stranger Things Season 4 Volume 2, or the final two episodes of season 4, will be available on Netflix from July 1.?The last two episodes are said to be four hours long, with episode 9 alone reportedly being about two and a half hours of runtime.
