Tejas Gowda, a former Bajrang Dal district coordinator and pro-Hindu activist, has called for a complete ban on unmarried couples staying in homestays, lodges, eateries, service apartments, and hotels throughout Karnataka, not only in Bengaluru. He claimed that after gaining entrance to such areas, couples engage in immoral behaviour that causes discomfort for families visiting these locations. He claimed that such "indecent behaviour" undermined societal standards.
Gowda filed a letter to the DGP, claiming that unmarried couples have unfettered access to these institutions. This not only leads to illegal acts within the rooms but also tarnishes the name of these establishments.
The letter further stated that such actions are frequently reported on weekends under the cover of trips, long drives, birthday parties, and bachelor parties.?
The petitioner further urged the Karnataka government to take prompt action by obtaining prohibitory orders barring unmarried couples from accessing these outlets throughout the state.?
He emphasised the importance of taking action to protect societal values and prevent future decline of moral standards. He asked the authorities to solve the matter as soon as possible.
Tejas' appeal also mentioned recent steps made by corporations such as OYO. The accommodation provider app has resolved to refuse hotel bookings to unmarried couples as a positive step towards reducing such behaviours.?
OYO has directed its Meerut partner hotels to do this with immediate effect. People acquainted with the policy change indicated that based on ground input, the business may spread it to more cities.?
"OYO has received feedback in the past from civil society groups, especially in Meerut urging action to address this issue. Additionally, residents from few other cities have petitioned for disallowing unmarried couples to check-in at OYO hotels," they said.?
