The well-known website OYO has changed its check-in policies for unmarried couples, potentially prohibiting them from checking in together at hotels in Meerut that partner with OYO. The news source PTI stated that the new rules will go into effect this year. In line with local social sensibilities, OYO has given its partner hotels the authority to accept or reject a couple's reservations based on their own discretion under the updated policy, the business stated. As soon as the news about policy change went viral, social media erupted with memes with some even calling this a ¡®bad idea.¡¯

PTI quoted Pawas Sharma, Region Head, OYO North India saying, ¡°OYO is committed to upholding safe and responsible hospitality practices. While we respect individual freedoms and personal liberty, we also recognise our responsibility to listen to and work with the law enforcement and civil society groups in the micro markets we operate in.¡±
The statement also mentioned, ¡°We will continue to review this policy and its impact periodically.¡±
Additionally, going forward, married couples must have legitimate evidence of their relationship at the time of check-in for all reservations, even those made online.
