Keeping your skin happy and hydrated during winter needs a bit of extra care. It's like giving your skin a warm, cosy hug to protect it from the chilly weather. During this time of the year, our skin tends to get dehydrated and dry. It becomes a little hard to manage and a little flaky if you think about it.?
You don't have to deal with harsh dry skin each winter.?Here are some ways?to enjoy glowing, hydrated skin during the winter season.
Start with a gentle, hydrating cleanser to avoid stripping away natural oils. Look for products with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or ceramides to boost moisture retention.
Opt for a rich, emollient moisturiser to create a protective barrier on your skin. Ingredients like shea butter, jojoba oil, or almond oil can provide intense hydration, keeping your skin smooth and supple.
Apply skincare products in the correct order to maximize hydration. Start with lightweight serums containing hyaluronic acid, follow with a moisturiser, and finish with a facial oil to seal in moisture. "When searching for a serum, moisturiser or mask, prioritise those containing hyaluronic acid, a molecule renowned for acting as a moisture magnet, capable of attracting and retaining up to a thousand times its weight in water. Its lightweight nature makes it suitable for oily skin as well. Hyaluronic acid plays a crucial role in repairing and maintaining the skin barrier, making it suitable for all skin types," adds?Dr Malavika Kohli, MD, DVD, DNB Dermatology & Aesthetics Director, Skin Secrets Consultant, Breach Candy & Jaslok Hospitals.
Invest in a humidifier for your living space, especially in heated environments. Humidifiers add moisture to the air, preventing your skin from drying out due to indoor heating systems.
Dr Ishad Aggarwal, Cosmetic Dermatologist, Wizderm Specialty Skin & Hair Clinic, "Avoid washing your face with hot/lukewarm water, as cold water tightens pores and firms facial skin. Hot water can loosen the skin, leading to the premature appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and smile lines. Additionally, hot water contributes to dryness and patchiness on the skin."?
Treat your skin to hydrating masks once or twice a week. Masks containing ingredients like aloe vera, honey, or hyaluronic acid can provide an extra boost of moisture.
Don't skip sunscreen in winter. UV rays can still harm your skin, and some sunscreens also offer added moisturizing benefits. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. "Despite the lack of apparent sunlight, harmful rays persist in winter. Whether indoors or outdoors, never neglect the application of a generous layer of sunscreen. While winter sunlight may feel warm and comforting, it can be as damaging to the skin as the harsh summer sun. If your sunscreen feels heavy and greasy, opt for a matte sunblock with a higher SPF," adds?Dr Malavika Kohli.
Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Herbal teas and foods with high water content, like fruits and vegetables, can also contribute to overall skin hydration. "Although people may not feel as thirsty in winter as they do in summer, make a conscious effort to consume at least 8-10 glasses of water, even if snow is falling outside. Adequate water intake hydrates your body from within, reflecting positively on your skin. A lack of water can result in itchy, flaky, and dry skin during the winter months," adds?Dr Malavika Kohli.
Maintain a balanced diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, and antioxidants. Foods like fish, nuts, fruits, and vegetables contribute to healthy skin from the inside out.
If your skin concerns persist or worsen, consider consulting a dermatologist. They can provide personalised advice and recommend specific products tailored to your skin type and concerns.
So, keep your skin healthy and smiling.?
