Located on Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, this museum has stood since the days when Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru was our president and was founded by political cartoonist, K. Shankar Pillai who was also a collector of dolls. His fascination with dolls began when he received one as a gift from a Hungarian official and soon he amassed an impressive collection of 500 dolls from all over the globe.
But it was after Indira Gandhi visited an exhibition with her father where he was showcasing them, that they teamed up to set up this museum that officially started on 30th November 1965, and has been open for visitors since then from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm except on Monday.

Starting with a collection of 1000 dolls, currently, the museum proudly boasts a collection of nearly 6000 costume dolls from around 85 countries of the world, making it a must-visit place for anyone who has a fascination for the culture of countries in the Middle East, East-Asia, Africa and Europe. The museum also holds dolls from the US, New Zealand and Australia.
But, that is not all, you can also learn about our Indian culture and history with 150 different kinds of Indian dolls that reflect the country's culture, history, and artistic expression. These dolls are clothed in traditional attire from every state including sarees and suits. Little bride and groom dolls that depict Indian wedding customs are also included in the collection.
