In one of the most talked about episodes of Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan's granddaughter Navya Nanda's podcast? What The Hell Navya!, the three generations of Bachchan women welcome Agastya Nanda as they engage in a candid conversation about Indian men. The episode highlights several discussions of what it means to be a modern-day man, what makes a perfect man and, most importantly, what does are the thoughts of Gen Z about masculinity today!?
Surprisingly, it was Agastya's first-hand experience and helpful inputs that the fans loved, even more than the fan favourite Jaya Bachchan's advice. Let's take a deep dive into the Bachchans' thoughts with our key takes from the entertaining listen.
When Navya talked about equality or how certain women now feel that they should pay on a date or split the bill or get offended if a man pays, Jaya said, "How stupid of them." She laughingly added, "You should let the man pay." Jaya shed light on how little interaction she had with men in her early years and even when she wanted to join the army, women weren't allowed in any other capacity than that of a nurse.
When asked about whether the men have changed from the time when Shweta herself was 20 and now when she sees her son Agastya at that age, she said, "In my time there was always that thing that men have to be strong and silent, and even when you have started dating they have to be the ones to come up and propose." But now she said she is happy that Agastya has grown up in an environment where he knows he doesn't need to hide his emotions saying.
When talking about toxic masculinity and what it means to show emotions as a man, Agastya mentions since he has never been told that 'men shouldn't cry', he's never found a man being emotional as something out of the ordinary. The Archies actor highlighted that good manners and being chivalrous are different from being toxic, saying, "You should open the door, but do it in a way to be polite and not in the way, I am the man!"
The Bachchan woman postulated how the times have changed and we have moved away from the strict gender stereotypes. But it was Agastya who highlighted how much the people you grow up around and since he has grown up around opinionated women, he knows how to value the opinion of women around him now.
