Sahil Gaba, a software engineer, had applied to Google twice before, in 2016 and 2018, but was rejected both times. However, they say good things happen when you least expect them. So, after four years of graduation and while working at Amazon, Gaba got a surprise interview call from Google, which led to a job offer. What made the difference? According to Gaba, it's because he had 'stopped caring.'?
Gaba shared with Business Insider that by the time of his two previous interview experiences, he had been struggling to secure a job for a long period and had faced numerous rejections.?
But now, since he had a job at Amazon, he was more relaxed and could approach the application process without worrying about the outcome.?
"I had kind of stopped caring about the results of the interviews because I had taken and failed so many of them," Gaba said.?
"In a way, it's quite liberating when you go in with a mindset that you've seen it all."?
Finally, after enduring eight rounds of interviews, he eventually received a job offer from Google in 2021 as a software engineer.?
But, it not just that - there's a lot of practice involved too.?
In big tech interviews, solving a coding question involves two main steps: devising the solution and writing the code.?
When Gaba was new to coding, he felt more pressure when writing the actual code, he explained. However, with more years of experience, he found that the writing part became less challenging.?
"Now, writing the code is not the hard part¡ªas long as I can come up with the solution, writing it out is straightforward," he noted.?
Gaba also recommends interviewing with multiple companies to improve negotiation skills.?
Additionally, he suggests applying directly to companies rather than relying solely on referrals, as relying on referrals means you're essentially applying to a recruiter rather than directly for a job.
