The number of students from Class of 2024 at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) who got job offers was 15-20% lower compared to the placements a year earlier.?However, compensation packages during placement season in IITs for class of 2024 remained consistent with the previous two years.
After the first phase that ended in December 2023, the engineering colleges will now enter the 2nd phase of placements which will continue till April-May.?
A reason behind the placement setback could be slowdown in the US tech sector's hiring, which has hit the opportunities for Indian IT and IT-enabled services.?
In fact, companies across sectors, led by technology products and services, are slashing hiring numbers, as noted in an ET report.?
The placements cells of IITs are coming up with various strategies to attract more job offers.?
The institutes are reaching out to more companies, including startups and public sector organisations, through alumni, venture capitalists and social networking platforms like LinkedIn.?
"We are planning to increase the spectrum of companies by plunging into the PSU and startup sector to maximise the number of offers," said Sushant K Shrivastava, coordinator of the training and placement cell of IIT-BHU, as quoted by ET.?
Students are in turn applying to off-campus job vacancies as a back up.?
It is reported that many students did not return home after the first phase since they were focused on applying for off-campus jobs.?
However, off-campus recruiters may take advantage of the situation.ET reported that there is likely to be a greater proportion of students this year who get lower-paying jobs - as low as Rs 3-4 lakhs - as compared to last year.??
