Beginning September 30, Dell's global sales team will be required to return to the office five days a week, marking the end of the hybrid work era. This shift comes on the heels of Amazon's recent announcement that it, too, will demand full-time office attendance starting next year¡ªnews that has already sparked significant employee dissatisfaction. Dell's email notifying employees of this transition has not been well received, with a viral social media post accusing the company of forcing its workforce back into the office.?
Here's the email Dell sent to its employees regarding the return to the office:
In this communication, Dell frames the shift as a "return to winning and taking share."
The rationale provided emphasises the need to adapt to the rapidly evolving industry and technology landscape: "The industry and technology are moving fast, the opportunity is enormous and we need to ensure we are best positioned to seize it."
The message asserts that "working remotely should be the exception rather than routine."
As per the mail, all global sales team members who are able to work from a Dell office are expected to be onsite five days a week, while those in remote sales positions will still have the flexibility to continue working from home.
The email, signed by Bill Scannell and John Byrne¡ªpresidents of different sales divisions¡ªenthusiastically concludes with a rallying cry: "Let's go win, outpace the competition, seize every opportunity, and take share!"
However, employees aren't quite as enthusiastic about this push to return to the office and 'take share.'

Comments on a viral Reddit thread highlight the hidden costs of this mandate, particularly the burden of commuting, which many believe will lead to significant pay cuts.?
One commenter raises a valid point: "If they have the best team in the business and been doing so well, why the change?"
Others suggest that this move is merely a tactic to encourage resignations, labelling it as a "layoff round."
One user even claimed, "They have a 6k-10k target for headcount reduction by year end to meet some stock market forecasts."
Interestingly, a survey by the professional social network?Blind found that after Amazon announced its own return-to-office mandate for all employees next year, a staggering 73% of workers are considering job hunting, while 32% reported knowing someone who has already quit in response to the decision.
