Navneet Anand, a 23-year-old from the small village of Harbhanga in BiharĄ¯s Purnia district, has triumphed over adversity to crack the UPSC Civil Services Exam (CSE) 2023 in his third attempt. After losing his father in Class 7 and being raised by a single mother, Navneet faced significant financial struggles but his journey to success shows his unwavering determination and resilience.
Navneet's parents came from a farming background but were determined for their child to excel. They ensured he received a good education, so since Class 3, he studied in a boarding school.?

"After competing in an All India Competition, I secured admission to Sainik School, Chittorgarh, Rajasthan. I have spent 8 years there, receiving all my grooming and training at this esteemed institution," he shared with Indian Masterminds.
When Navneet was in Class 7, tragedy struck with the loss of his father in a road accident.?
The weight of responsibility fell on him as he witnessed his mother struggle financially and endure insensitive comments in a society often lacking gender sensitivity.?
This became a turning point for Navneet, igniting a determination to achieve something remarkable that would secure his future and bring respect to his mother.
Navneet initially aimed for the National Defense Academy (NDA), but -2 myopia halted his dream. He then pursued government exams while studying economics at Ambedkar University, Delhi.

His first two UPSC attempts in 2021 and 2022 failed at the prelims. However, he used this time to complete the UPSC CSE mains syllabus and clear exams like CDS, UGC NET JRF, and UPSC CAPF, ranking 37th.
In his third attempt, Navneet dedicated eight months to focused study, prioritising Previous YearsĄ¯ Questions (PYQs). This strategy worked, and he cleared the prelims.
"And I was right. I finally aced the mains and the interview stages, securing an All India Rank of 499, without any coaching," Navneet shared.
Navneet's success story is a profound source of pride for his mother, overshadowing years of struggle and societal taunts.?
"My mother said, 'I lived 15 years in a single day,'" says Navneet. His success is a shared victory, as much hers as it is his.
