The world of paan has evolved significantly. Gone are the days of a simple paan; instead, we find ourselves in an era of innovation, with fire paans, ice paans, chocolate paans, and even smoky paans becoming the norm. However, not all new trends bring positive outcomes. A recent incident, where a girl developed holes in her stomach after consuming a smoky paan, serves as a stark reminder of this reality.
On Monday, TOI reported a distressing incident involving a young girl who experienced severe stomach pains after consuming a smoky paan.?
What started as a fun experiment with liquid nitrogen turned into a nightmare for the 12-year-old.?
Initially intrigued by the novelty of the smoky paan, she joined others in trying it out.?
"I just wanted to try the smoky paan because it looked interesting, and everyone else was trying it too," she said.
However, her experience turned into agony when she began experiencing intense discomfort, unlike others who remained unharmed.
Upon seeking medical attention, doctors diagnosed her with perforation peritonitis, indicating a hole in her stomach.?
Liquid nitrogen, known for its rapid expansion from liquid to gas, poses serious health risks.?
When confined, the rapid vaporisation of liquid nitrogen can create powerful forces, causing damage to the skin and posing significant health hazards. Inhaling the vapors can lead to breathing difficulties, and there have been documented cases of tissue damage due to its hazardous properties.
The doctors informed her that only Intra-op OGD scopy could prevent further complications.?
"Intra-op OGD scopy is a procedure where, a flexible tube with a camera and light, are used during surgery to examine the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum-the first part of the small intestine," explained Dr. Vijay HS, the Operating Surgeon (Surgical Gastroenterology) who led the surgical team.
A section of the young girl's stomach, measuring 4x5 cm on the lesser curvature, had to be removed.
Dr. Vijay emphasised the importance of caution and safety as the popularity of liquid nitrogen in culinary circles increases.
"Vigilance and increased awareness are essential to avoid potentially devastating consequences," he added.
