At 21-years-old, Arya Rajendran was the youngest candidate in the fray in the recently concluded local bodies elections in Kerala.
Now the second year B. Sc Mathematics student has added another record to her name. Arya is now the youngest mayor of a city, anywhere in India.
Arya, a CPM candidate, won from Mudavanmugal ward, defeating UDF candidate Sreekala by 2872 votes was on Friday elected as the mayor of Kerala's capital city Thiruvananthapuram.?
The CPIM on Friday nominated Arya, who has been an active figure in student politics through the SFI for the post.
Arya was a surprise nomination to the high-profile post after the CPIM's Mayor candidate tasted defeat in the polls.
She is the daughter of Rajendran, an electrician, and Sreelatha, an LIC agent.
Reacting to her nomination, Arya said she is happy to assume the new role.
Mekala Kavya, who became the Mayor of Jawaharnagar municipal corporation in Telanagana earlier this at the age of 26 was the youngest to hold that post till now.?
