Six days after he ordered what is being described as the worst attack on the Uttar Pradesh Police in a long time, the man behind the killing of eight policemen in Kanpur has been arrested.
Gangster Vikas Dubey surrendered before the Madhya Pradesh police outside the Mahalak Temple in Ujjain, where he reportedly walked in and revealed his identity, and let the cops arrest him.
Dubey has been on the run since Friday after the encounter in Kanpur came to light.
It all began on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday at the Dikru village under the Chaubeypur police station when a police team reached there to arrest Dubey, a history-sheeter who has more than 60 criminal cases against him.?
But Dubey and his team were well prepared, thanks to the information leaked by some cops at the Chaubeypur police station itself.
The police team was shot at from rooftops by Dubey's men, killing eight of them on the spot.
While police were looking for him, Dubey's family said he was not been home for two days.
Hours later two criminals belonging to the Vikas Dubey gang was shot dead by the police. The encounter took place in Kanshi Ram Nivada village. The two men were identified as Prem Prakash and Atul Dubey.
Later in the day, Dubey's house and cars were demolished by the Kanpur police, using the same JCBs his gang had used to block the roads.
On Friday, Dubey's mother Sarla Devi disowned her son and said that he should be killed in an encounter.
"By killing innocent policemen, he has done a very bad thing. I saw the news of the encounter on TV. I want him should come out and surrender to police for his betterment, otherwise, police will find him anyway. I am saying nab him and then do encounter."
The encounter case was transferred to an STF led by DIG Anant Deo.
A probe revealed that SO Chaubeypur Police Station, Vinay Tiwari was the one who leaked the information on the raid to Dubey.
A letter said to be written by slain DySP Mishra addressed to then Kanpur SSP Anant Deo also surfaced online in which he had talked about ¡°closed relations¡± between Tiwari, and Dubey.
Tiwari was later suspended and later arrested. All the 68 personnel at the station have been replaced.
The Uttar Pradesh Government had initially announced a reward of Rs 2.5 lakhs on information on Dubey, which was doubled to Rs 5 lakhs on Wednesday.
By Tuesday, four people including Dubey's daughter-in-law Chama, maid Rekha Agnihotri and a neighbour were arrested for helping the gangster and his men by providing them support and information about police personnel's position during the encounter.?
The Uttar Pradesh Police had formed 40 teams to hunt for Dubey across the state.
The first lead on his location came from Faridabad, Haryana on Tuesday evening when he was spotted at a hotel there.
But he slipped away before the cops reached there.?It was reported that Dubey was trying to surrender outside UP as he was fearing for his life.
Police departments in other neighbouring states were also put on alert following several reports of him being on the road.?
While Dubey is still at large the Yogi Adityanath government ordered a magisterial inquiry into the encounter on Tuesday.
On Wednesday morning, another member of the Dubey gang, Amar Dubey was shot dead by the Kanpur Police. He was the brother of Atul Dubey, who was killed on the day of the encounter.
On the same day STF picked up Dubey¡¯s brother-in-law and childhood friend Raju Khullar, alias Gyanendra, from MP¡¯s Shahdol. Khullar¡¯s son, Adarsh, had been picked up days ago but the arrest wasn¡¯t made public until after his father was detained.
While police teams in UP, Delhi, Harana, and Rajasthan continued to look for him, Dubey surprised everyone when he appeared outside the Mahakal Temple in Ujjain, revealing his identity "Mai Vikas Dubey hum, Kanpurwala" he reportedly announced.?
He repeated the same while he was being taken away by the cops from outside the temple.
On Thursday, two more of Dubey's men were shot dead by police.
Prabhat Mishra and?Praveen Dubey?were part of the group of 15 men who attacked the police team.
Dubey was killed in Etawah when he was trying to escape after stealing a car.
Mishra, meanwhile, was being brought to Kanpur after his arrest in Haryana¡¯s Faridabad. He was gunned down when he tried to flee from the police custody.
