Air India Express's Calicut-Dubai flight was diverted to Muscat on Saturday night after a burning smell was observed in cabin mid-air, officials of aviation regulator DGCA said on Sunday (July 16). The burning smell was coming from one of the vents in the forward galley and pilots, therefore, diverted the plane to Muscat and landed safely, the officials said.
As per a report by NDTV, a senior official of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) confirmed that the Air India Express B737-800 aircraft VT-AXX operating flight IX-355 (Calicut-Dubai) was diverted to Muscat as, during Cruise, a burning smell came from one of the vents in the forward galley."
"Crew carried out a non-normal checklist for smoke fire or fumes and diverted to Muscat and landed safely," he said.
The official also told that the on-ground engineering inspections were carried out as a relevant task of the Fault Isolation Manual. He said that the Engine Ground run was carried out with both the ENGINE and auxiliary power unit (APU) operating.
¡°It was checked for smoke however, no fumes or smoke was observed from either engine or APU. There were no observations of the smell of fuel, oil, or hydrogen contamination. The oven in the forward galley was released under MEL (minimum equipment list),¡± the official noted.
Shortly after, another incident was reported where IndiGo's Sharjah-Hyderabad flight was diverted to Karachi as a precaution on Sunday after pilots observed defect in one of the engines.?An additional flight has been sent to Karachi to fly the passengers to Hyderabad.
On July 5, a SpiceJet flight SG11 made an emergency landing at Karachi airport. The Delhi to Dubai international flight suffered a technical fault and made the landing at the Pakistan¡¯s Karachi airport. A flight ferried the passengers to Dubai later in the day. More than 150 passengers were present onboard the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft.
The company had said that it was horrifying few hours to arrange another flight and fly out passengers out of Karachi due to India-Pakistan relations. While enmity between the two countries make the diplomatic channel difficult and a nightmare for air carriers in case of emergency landing, there¡¯s no other choice but to land at the nearest possible airport to avoid any unfortunate event.
Recently, three Aircraft of International airlines made emergency landings at various airports in the country in the last 48 hours, making it a day of technical emergencies for various airlines. A senior official in the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) informed that these landings were made in Calicut, Chennai, and Kolkata on Friday and Saturday. All emergency landings happened because of various technical issues.? ?
