Prime Minister Narendra Modi, today, flagged off the Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik (UDAN) scheme for cheaper travel.
Addressing the crowd at the Shimla Airport, Modi said that air travel is now not limited to the rich. The three inaugural flights were launched in the sectors of Shimla-Delhi, Kadapa-Hyderabad and Nanded-Hyderabad.
For 50 per cent of the seats of flights under UDAN, the fare cap will be Rs 2,500 for approximately one hour of journey on a fixed-wing aircraft for a 30-minute journey, and the rest will be market-based pricing."
UDAN ('Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik') is a first-of-its-kind scheme globally to stimulate regional connectivity through a market-based mechanism, the PMO said in a tweet.
The scheme is seen as a drastic step to boost regional connectivity.?

The Airports Authority of India has approved 27 proposals which will see 27 currently served airports, 12 currently underserved airports and 31 currently unserved airports (for a total of 70 airports) connected.
Out of the 70 airports, 24 airports are in the western region, 17 in the north, 11 in the south, 12 in the east and six in regions of the northeast.
Through these 27 proposals, as many as 22 states and two union territories will be connected.
The airlines chosen under the scheme are Alliance Air, Spice Jet, Turbo Megha Airways, Air Deccan and Air Odisha.?
