The fallout from the bloody clashes at the inter-state border between Assam and Mizoram earlier this week refuses to die down and if anything is only showing signs of things further escalating.
On Friday, in an unprecedented move, criminal cases were filed against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, four senior officers of the state police and two more officials.
They have been booked under various charges, including attempt to murder and criminal conspiracy, Mizoram Inspector General of Police (Headquarter) John Neihlaia said.
The four senior Assam Police officers named in the FIR are Inspector General of Police (IGP) Anurag Aggarwal, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Cachar Devojyoti Mukherjee, Cachar Superintendent of Police Cahndrakant Nimbalkar, and officer in-charge of Dholai police station, Sahab Uddin, Neihlaia said.
Cachar Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli and Cachar Divisional Forest Officer Sunnydeo Chaudhary have also been booked under the same charges, he said.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the border in Assam, the cops there have issued summons to Mizoram's Rajya Sabha member and six state officials, including a Deputy Commissioner and a Superintendent of Police, for their alleged role in Monday's border violence.
In another development, 15 MLAs of Assam's Barak Valley, cutting across all political parties, have decided to move court against the Superintendent of Police of Mizoram's Kolasib District for his "barbaric act that led to the death of six Assam police men and scores of people injured". The meeting of the MLAs was chaired by Assam's Urban Development Minister Ashol Singhal.
A day before, Assam had issued a travel advisory to its people asking them not to travel to Mizoram, due to safety concerns.
Assam police had also issued a notification saying that in order to check trafficking of illicit drugs, all incoming vehicles from Mizoram will be thoroughly checked at all the entry points along the Assam Mizoram border.
In yet another sign that peace is still away, Cachar Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli said that the Assam Police are setting up posts at border sites to secure the area.
"We have to ensure security to our citizens. We have to set up our guards and in this process, we are setting up points where police will be deployed to secure the area," she told ANI.
Cachar Deputy Commissioner said the Mizoram police has crossed the border, entered the forest area and set up camps there.
"At the borders, they have cut down the forest and come forward to set up camps. This is not ideal and is not done. Our public is feeling vulnerable," Keerthi Jalli said.
Mizoram, on the other hand, is accusing Assam of an economic blockade of the state in Barak Valley where the National Highway 306 is blocked.?
On Monday, the border dispute between the two states peaked and a fierce gun battle between the forces of the two states resulted in the death of five Assam police personnel and one civilian.
One injured policeman succumbed to his injuries later taking the total number of policemen killed to six.
