Cab and auto drivers charging passengers much higher fares for their trips has been an age-old issue. In recent years, this has largely been addressed with the arrival of app-based cab aggregators, where the customers know exactly how much they have to pay for the trip.
But an Uber cab driver in Bengaluru literally took passengers to a ride and allegedly managed to dupe them by showing a fake screenshot of Rs 5,194 on his phone.
The scam came to light after a customer, identified as Loiyum Khuman filed a complaint against the cab driver.
According to Khuman, on January 5, he had booked an Uber from terminal 1 of Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) to reach home in Tavarekere, near BTM Layout.
The Uber app showed that the fare for the trip was Rs 194.
But after reaching the destination when Khuman tried to make the payment on the app, the driver, identified as Bharath Gowda said the amount due was Rs 5,194.?
Gowda also showed him a bill reading Rs 5,194 on his app and made Khuman pay the amount to him directly through UPI.
Khuman realised that he was duped only after he raised a complaint with Uber, which confirmed that the amount due was, in fact, Rs 914.
The incident came to light after Khuman posted about it on social media and also filed a police complaint.
During the investigation, it came to light that Gowda was a serial offender and had duped more passengers, mostly those coming to Bengaluru from other states, in a similar fashion.
Based on his complaint Gowda has been booked under IPC Sections 465 (forgery), 471 (using as genuine a forged document), and 417 (cheating).
Recently the Karnataka government introduced new rules, that among others have set a limit to the amount cabs can charge in peak hours.
It also set uniform kilometre-based fares for all types of cabs including for app-based aggregators like Ola and Uber as well as city taxis.
