They say that hard work and determination will pay off, and Kamal Kishor Mandal has his life to prove it.
The 42-year-old has been appointed as an Assistant Professor at the Ambedkar Thought and Social Work department (Post Graduate) at the Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University (TMBU).
Until recently, Mandal used to work in the same department as a peon.
Mandal, a resident of Bhagalpur started his career as a night guard at RD&DJ College in Munger in 2003 at the age of 23.
Though he was a graduate in political science Mandal took up the job since he was in urgent need of money.
But as luck would have it, Mandal was sent to Ambedkar Thought and Social Work department (Post Graduate) at the Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University (TMBU) on deputation and in 2008 he was made a peon there.
While working there, Mandal would watch students there and felt that he should also study more.
He sought permission from the University authorities and in 2009 completed his Master's Degree in Ambedkar Thought and Social Work.
Mandal was not content with a Master's Degree and wanted to study further, and after three years of relentless pursuit, the University granted him permission to do a Ph.D.
In 2013 Mandal got himself enrolled for Ph.D. and completed it four years later.
He also cleared National Eligibility Test (NET) and started applying for lecturer jobs.
That opportunity came knocking in 2020 when the Bihar State University Service Commission (BSUSC) advertised vacancies for four posts of assistant professor in TMBU, where Maldal was working.
In May 2022 the results were announced and Maldal was appointed as an Assistant Professor at the same department where he used to work as a peon.
According to The Times of India, Mandal's father Gopal still sells tea at a roadside stall to run his family.
"I never allowed poverty and family problems to come in the way of my study. I had attended classes in the morning and duty in the afternoon while I used the night hours to revise the class study," Mandal told The Times of India.
His success story has also become an inspiration to many aspirants.
"He (Mandal) is an inspiration for the society as he has shown how one can achieve success under adverse circumstances," Professor Sanjay Kumar Jaiswal, who taught him at his free coaching institute for NET preparation said.
