The painful wait of Shekarappa Gyanagaudar and his family for the body of Naveen Shekarappa Gyanagaudar, the Indian student who was killed in Ukraine is continuing.?
Even after a week of his death, the family has not been able to say the final goodbye and perform Naveen's last rites.
Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Tuesday stated that the authorities have recovered the body of Naveen Shekarappa.
"I have spoken to the External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in this regard. He has informed that the body has been embalmed and preserved at a mortuary. He has assured that as soon as the shelling is stopped, attempts will be made to bring it back to India," he said.
"Continuous attempts are being made, the embassy officers have also told us that they are in touch with mortuary authorities where the body is kept," he added.
21-year-old Shekarappa, who was studying at Kharkiv National Medical University, Ukraine died in?shelling while he was standing in a queue?to buy food on March 1.
He was the first Indian to be killed in the ongoing conflict.
A devastated family, back in Karnataka had appealed to the government to bring back his body.
Shekharappa Gyanagoudar a native of Chalageri in Karnataka¡¯s Haveri district had also blamed the system for his son not getting admission in India.
"Despite scoring 97% in PUC, my son could not secure a medical seat in State. To get a medical seat one has to give crores of rupees and students are getting the same education abroad spending less money," he had said.
Nearly 20,000 Indians, mostly students were in Ukraine at the start of the conflict.
Out of this, over 17,000 have been evacuated, according to the government.
On Monday, Indian student Harjot Singh, who took four bullets while fleeing Ukrainian capital Kyiv a few days ago, landed at the Hindon airbase near Delhi.
Ukraine, Russia blame?
On Monday, at the UNSC both Ukraine and Russia had blamed the other country for failing to provide a safe passage of citizens and foreigners caught in the raging conflict.
Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN Ambassador Sergiy Kyslytsya told the UN Security Council briefing on the humanitarian situation in Ukraine on Monday that "Ukraine deeply regrets that more than 2,000 citizens of India, China, Turkey, Pakistan and other countries suffer today along with Ukrainians from Russian aggression."
He said the government of Ukraine was in contact 24/7 with diplomatic missions and consulates of foreign countries to ensure that their citizens can safely return to their countries as soon as possible.
