A 15-year-old girl from Chandigarh who was left blinded after an acid attack has beaten the odds to score 95.20 per cent in the CBSE Class 10 exam, thereby becoming her school's topper.
The girl, Kafi, appeared for the exams as a student from the Institute of Blind in Chandigarh.
Her life took a turn for the worse when she was just three years old.?
While playing Holi in her hometown Hissar, three men flung acid on her for no apparent reason, leaving her severely burnt on the face and with both eyes damaged.
In the next six years, Kafi's parents struggled with her, taking her from one hospital to another, including to the AIIMS in Delhi. But despite the best of their efforts, Kafi's eyesight could not be regained.
The family later moved to Chandigarh, where she was admitted to the Institute of Blind.
In the meantime, the three men who committed the heinous crime were 'let off' with a jail term of two years.
Kafi's father, Pawan, filed an appeal against the lenient sentence to the accused, which is still pending in the High Court.
While she is delighted with her performance in the CBSE Board exam, Kafi is not settling with it.
Kafi said she wants to become a civil servant and make her parents, who stood with her as pillars of support, proud.
"I have learnt that things won't work as planned. We should have a backup plan. If not an IAS officer, I will become a teacher," Kafi said.
