In a tragic incident, a young doctor who was at the forefront of Madhya Pradesh's battle against COVID-19 has died of organ failure after he contracted the deadly virus.
Dr. Shuhbam Upadhyay was posted as a medical officer in the Government Bundelkhand Medical College in Madhya Pradesh¡¯s Sagar where he was attending COVID-19 patients.
The 27-year old had tested positive for COVID-19 in October and was undergoing treatment in Bhopal.
However, his condition did not improve, and as the infection spread it affected his lungs.
Dr. Ajay Goenka, director of Chirayu Medical College and Hospital, said, 'Dr. Shubham Upadhyay died in our hospital on Wednesday. He was infected with the coronavirus and was hospitalized on 10 November. He said, "His lungs were completely damaged."
According to a colleague, Upadhyay was found infected with the coronavirus on October 28 and from then until November 10, he was undergoing treatment at Bundelkhand Medical College, Sagar, but due to his condition deteriorating, he was admitted on November 10 at Chirayu Medical College in Bhopal, where he died on Wednesday.
According to the doctors who treated him, the only way to save the young physician was a lungs transplant.
They had even contacted a hospital in Chennai for the transplant which was estimated to cost Rs 70-80 lakh.
Madhya Pradesh government had even decided to bear the expenses for the treatment of the 27-year-old and Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had granted the funds for the transplant.
However, as he could not be airlifted to Chennai due to the Cyclone there, Upadhyay could not undergo the crucial, life-saving procedures and lost his battle on Wednesday.
"Dr. Shubham made every word of the oath he is administered while becoming a doctor meaningful. He showed to be a true citizen of the country. I pay my respects at the feet of the son of Mother India and pray to God to give peace to the departed soul," CM Chouhan said in a tweet condoling Upadhyay's death.
