A court in Kolkata on Saturday found Sanjay Roy, the prime accused in the sensational RG Kar junior doctor rape and murder case, guilty.??He has been convicted under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita that deal with rape, murder, and causing death.
Roy, who was a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, was accused of the rape and murder of an on-duty doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das of the Sealdah court delivered the judgment nearly two months after the in-camera trial commenced on November 12.?The court will pronounce Roy's sentence on January 20
The incident occurred on the night of August 9, leading to nationwide outrage and prolonged protests by junior doctors in Kolkata, demanding justice for the victim and adequate security arrangements in state-run hospitals.
Roy was arrested by the Kolkata Police on August 10, a day after the 28-year-old trainee medic's body was recovered from the seminar room of the hospital.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) which took over the investigation in the case from the Kolkata Police had sought the harshest punishment for Roy. Investigators had presented evidence, including CCTV footage and his presence near the crime scene.
After reports of the shocking rape and murder surfaced, there were accusations of a cover-up and involvement of more than one person. However, investigations concluded that Roy had committed the crime alone.
The victim's parents have also filed an application before the court seeking further investigation into the case.
"Not just one, but the DNA report shows the presence of four boys and one girl. We will feel some relief when the accused are punished. Until we get justice, we will keep knocking on the doors of the court and will also seek the support of the people of the country," the father of the victim told ANI.
