The low-pressure area formed above the Bay of Bengal has strengthened into a cyclonic storm, resulting in the first cyclone along the Indian coast in 2024. The cyclonic storm, Cyclone Remal, is expected to reach Bangladesh and the nearby West Bengal coast on May 26. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclone Remal will strengthen into a severe cyclonic storm before it makes landfall on Sunday.
Cyclone Remal is expected to make landfall between Sagar Island in West Bengal and Bangladesh's Khepupara on Sunday at midnight.?
"It's very likely to cross Bangladesh and the adjoining West Bengal coasts between Sagar Island and Khepupara around Sunday midnight as a severe cyclonic storm," the IMD said.

The cyclone is named 'Remal' by Oman, meaning 'sand' in Arabic. Cyclones in the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal are named by a total of 13 countries in the region based on a standard naming convention. According to this convention, Regional Specialised Meteorological Centres (RSMCs) and Tropical Cyclone Warning Centres (TCWCs) name every cyclone around the world.

According to the IMD, the cyclone is likely to reach a wind speed of 102?kilometres?per hour on Sunday before landfall.?
The IMD has also issued a heavy rainfall warning for May 26 and 27. In the coastal districts of West Bengal and adjoining districts of north Odisha, light to moderate rainfall is anticipated at most places, with heavy to very heavy rainfall expected at isolated locations.?
Similarly, in Mizoram, Tripura, and South Manipur, light to moderate rainfall is forecast at most places, with heavy to very heavy rainfall likely at isolated locations on the same dates.
The IMD has issued an orange alert for several districts, including Kolkata, Howrah, Nadia, and Jhargram, due to the expected light to moderate rainfall.
