In a shocking incident, a Dalit man from Banda district of Uttar Pradesh has alleged that he was beaten up by upper caste men from the village for using a common handpump.
Ramchandra Raidas, a resident of Tendura village alleged that he was beaten up by one Ram Dayal Yadav and his family on Friday when he had gone to collect water from a government-installed handpump.? ?
According to Narendra Pratap Singh, Station House Officer of Bisanda police station, the 45-year-old victim has sustained injuries in the attack. He has been admitted to a primary health centre.
Police said that this is not the first time that collecting water from the handpump has become a caste issue in the village.
Some two months ago, Raidas had alleged that the accused had banned them from taking water from the hand pump installed in the locality of the Yadavs, but the matter was resolved following an intervention by the sub-divisional magistrate of Atarra.
The recently released ¡°Crime in India¡± 2019 report by the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB)had shown that there were a total of 45,935 cases of crime against Dalits in the previous year.
Uttar Pradesh has the most number of cases of crime against SCs ¨C 11,829 cases, which is 25.8% of the all such cases in the country.
The number of Dalits murdered in the country last year was 923 out of which 219 took place in Uttar Pradesh.
The total number of 3,486 cases of?rape of Dalit women?were registered in India during the same period, out of which 537 were from UP.
