Incidents of caste discrimination are not uncommon in our country, and one community that primarily faces the brunt of it is that of Dalits.?
In one such happening, the upper caste Rajput community members allegedly assaulted a 21-year-old Dalit man and his family members after they were annoyed by his good dressing sense and sunglasses in Gujarat's Banaskantha district.
Seven people were booked in connection with the incident at Mota village in Palanpur taluka on Tuesday night (May 30), police said on Thursday.
The accused have been reportedly identified as Dhursinh Cheharsinh Rajput, Bharatsinh Khumansinh Rajput, Sureshsinh Ranjitsinh Rajput, Jaydipsinh Chamansinh Rajput, Bhagvansinh Lakshmansinh Rajput, Jagatsinh Lakshmansinh Rajput and Pradipsinh Dhursinh Rajput.
Based on the FIR, it was revealed that Jigarbhai, along with his brother Bhupatbhai, was sitting outside his house when Dhursinh maltreated him by hurling casteist comments on Tuesday morning, Indian Express reported.
Dhursinh also allegedly issued a threat to kill Jigarbhai for "flying too high". After Bhupatbhai pacified both parties, Jigarbhai left the spot and headed for work.
Later in the day, Bharatsinh, Sureshsinh, Jaydipsinh, Bhagvansinh, Jagatsinh and Pradipsinh again approached Jigarbhai while he was returning home from work and attacked him with sticks.
Following this, a friend accompanying Jigarbhai at the time called up Bhupatbhai. After that, Bhupatbhai and his mother, Sitaben, came to rescue Jigarbhai, but they were also assaulted by the accused, and Sitaben's blouse was allegedly ripped during this altercation.
The accused ran away from the spot after more of Jigarbhai's relatives arrived there. Due to the scuffle, Jigarbhai and his mother had to be admitted to Palanpur Civil Hospital.
The First Information Report (FIR) was lodged against the accused individuals at Gadh police station under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections about rioting, unlawful assembly, outraging the modesty of a woman, voluntarily causing hurt, using abusive language, etc, as per a PTI report.
They were also booked under relevant sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
So far, no arrest has been made in connection with the incident, police said.
