The impasse between the family members of a Dalit man, who was beaten to death in Asadi village, and police and administration in Rajasthan's Barmer district continued even after 50 hours on Friday with his family refusing to take the body.
The family members are demanding compensation and a government job for one member, along with the arrest of all the accused involved in the murder.
Kojaram Meghwal (40), a resident of Asadi village, was beaten to death with sticks over an old enmity on Wednesday.
His family members have lodged an FIR at the Girab police station against 16 people.
Meanwhile, according to police, a case against all 16 named accused has been registered, and three of them have already been apprehended and are being interrogated.
As per a TOI report, the people of the community postponed all the programmes and meetings on Ambedkar Jayanti on Friday and reached outside the mortuary where the body is kept.
In the afternoon, they marched on foot from the dharna spot to the district collectorate and sat there for an hour under the blazing sun.
The delegation gave district collector Lok Bandhu a memorandum addressed to the chief minister. Later, they returned to the dharna site.
Dalit community leaders and public representatives from Barmer and Jaisalmer reached the dhana spot. They raised questions on the careless attitude of the police and administration that despite lodging a case of threat to life and apprehension of murder, police did not arrest the accused.
To get justice for Kojaram, thousands of people from many parts of western Rajasthan gathered in Barmer.
In the morning, they gave a floral tribute to Dr B M Ambedkar and later cancelled all the programmes. They reached the dharna place in a silent rally demanding justice for Kojaram.?
After returning from the district collectorate, they accused the government and police of double standards with SC-STs.
After the talks failed, the resentment among Dalits increased.
Hundreds of police personnel from Jalore, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur and nearby districts have been deployed at Barmer district headquarters.
