Subjugation of Dalits in the country continues unabated and equality is still an aloof dream. Yet another incident of atrocities committed against the oppressed community came to the fore after a group of Dalit men had to carry the body of one of their community members through sewers and garbage dump after they were refused to used road for the funeral procession.
The incident occurred in Vilankurichi in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.
The appalling incident of caste discrimination came to fore after a video surfaced online. The video shows men carrying the body of 73-year-old Pappamal after being denied access to a proper road for the funeral.
Dalits in the area are not allowed to use the Karl Marx Nagar-Gandhi Nagar road to commute because the road is used by upper caste members.
Due to this restriction, Dalits must take a two-kilometre-long detour to reach the funeral ground.
More than 1,500 Dalit families at Lenin Street and Ambedkar Nagar are forced to jump canals are cross sewers for a funeral procession.
In August, Dalit villagers in Vellore were forced to drop their dead from atop a 20-foot-high bridge after being denied access to road on the banks of Palar river by upper caste Hindu community.
The shocking video made rounds on social media exposing the steep casteism so deeply engrained in the minds of people.
Another incident was reported from Uttar Pradesh¡¯s Bulandshahr where a group of 15 women were stopped from entering temple of a local deity by the upper caste members of the village, leading to tension in the area.
