In a shocking incident, five people were killed and eight others were injured in a road accident on Mumbai Bandra-Worli Sea Link road in the early hours of Wednesday.
The accident took place around 3 am between pole numbers 76 and 78 on the south-bound stretch of the sea link bridge, which connects Bandra in the western suburbs to Worli in south Mumbai.
Three cars, including one which was involved in an accident earlier and an ambulance, were stationed on the sea link bridge when the speeding vehicle crashed into them.
A car had met with an accident after it hit a divider. The ambulance was on the spot to take the injured to hospital and the occupants of two other cars had halted their vehicles to help them.
At that time, another car coming from behind rammed into three stationary cars and the ambulance.
A total of 13 people including a woman and a Sea Link employee, were injured in the horrific crash.
Five of them were later declared dead during treatment.
Six of the injured were undergoing treatment in different hospitals. Two others were allowed to go after being treated for minor injuries.
The shocking accident was caught on CCTV camera.
?In the video, the occupants of the two cars can be seen trying to rescue those involved in the first accident.
The speeding car, which looked like it had lost control crashed into them and the ambulance.
The impact of the crash was so massive that the speeding car got almost flung into the air and the two others rolled violently due to the collision.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered condolences for the loss of lives in the accident.
"Pained by the loss of lives due to an accident on the Bandra-Worli Sea Link in Mumbai. Condolences to the bereaved families. I hope that those who have been injured have a speedy recovery," the Prime Minister's Office tweeted on Wednesday.
The accident comes at a time when the issue of road safety has once been in focus following the death of former Tata Sons Chairman Cyrus Mistry in a car crash on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway near Palghar.
According to official data, more than 59,000 people have died and 80,000 seriously injured in road accidents in Maharashtra in less than five years.
The state has witnessed 59,308 deaths in road accidents since the beginning of 2018, including 9,121 fatalities reported between January and July this year.
As per the data, at least 13,261 people died in road crashes in 2018, 12,788 in 2019, 11,569 in 2020 and 13,528 in 2021.
