In Panaji, the capital city of Goa, Mancurad mangoes are hitting the market at a price that may leave consumers with a bitter taste - an eye-watering Rs 7,000 per dozen. This unprecedented price tag marks a significant increase compared to last year's peak cost of Rs 6,000 per dozen for the local mango variant.
Known for their exceptional sweetness and rich pulpiness, Mancurad mangoes are a highly sought-after delicacy during the mango season. However, this year's steep rise in prices has raised eyebrows among consumers, who may find it difficult to justify such a hefty expenditure for a dozen mangoes.
The unexpected early arrival of these luscious mangoes has taken both vendors and consumers by surprise. Traditionally, the mango season kicks off during the summer months, making the current appearance of these fruits quite unusual. The unusually high price tag attached to these mangoes can also be attributed to their limited quantity.
"The fruits have arrived in the market in winter and are available only in a limited quantity. Therefore, the high price," said a fruit vendor, Nisar Nandihaldi.
Vendors are hopeful that prices will gradually decrease from mid-February as the market adapts to the unusual circumstances.
"Currently, consumers are participating in the race of 'who gets the season's first taste'. However, most buyers are being patient," said another vendor, Manguesh Naik.
Despite the current premium rates, fruit vendors remain hopeful that prices will stabilise by April, bringing joy to consumers eagerly anticipating the taste of the prized Mancurad mangoes. In markets across Margao and parts of Bardez, mangoes are being sold for Rs 6,000 per dozen.
"Most of the Mancurad mangoes being supplied to us are from Bicholim taluka since they appear to have had an early ripening and subsequent harvest," said Amin Khan, a vendor from Margao.
"We can expect the prices to go spiralling down once the Mancurad supply from other areas starts hitting the market along with the inflow of other variants of mangoes."
