In a shocking incident, a Karnataka cop who has been a part of crime bureau team trying to tackle betting and gambling racket was arrested for allegedly running one himself in Chikkaballpura district.
As per a report by The News Minute, the incident came to light when a betting racket ring leader raised his voice and challenged them to arrest their own staff member who was running a bigger IPL betting racket than him, which led Chikkaballapura police in for a shock.
Following the revelation, 42-year-old Head Constable Manjunath was arrested. He is a resident of Chintamani, the report added.
A senior cop told TNM that accused cop had been running the betting racket for a long time.?"He was part of a police investigation team which keeps tabs on gambling, betting and prostitution. Whenever the team arrested gambling or betting masters, he used to take note of their modus operandi and used them to conduct his own racket. In this process, he also used to help others in the racket to escape, and even alerted them about the police movement," the officer explained.
Not just cricket, the accused allegedly encouraged people to bet on high-value assets like land and residential plots, the report added.
Chikkaballapura District Superintendent of Police G K Mithun Kumar told news agency IANS that the constable was suspended last week and was under surveillance for a long time.
"Following the information given by the person who was arrested last week for running a cricket betting racket, we arrested Manjunath. He was taken into custody on Thursday evening but tested positive for coronavirus after the customary health check-up," the SP was quoted as saying by the news agency. However, the police claim that they have registered a case and investigation is on.?
