People from all walks of life from across the country have contributed to the relief work of the suffering people in Kerala, besides the security forces who made sure that no one is left in an unsafe place. But, Kerala's fishermen, with their heroic work, emerged as the unlikely heroes in the calamity. They made their way through the flooded lanes in the flooded areas and saved the people from drowning. Many of the fishermen risked their lives as they were not even trained for doing such work. On Wednesday, their?heroic work and determination were?acknowledged by the people and the state government.??

The fishermen, mostly from the coastal areas of Kollam and Alappuzha which were not badly hit by the floods, came with their boats, which were smaller and could easily navigate through narrow lanes, thus reaching to many people who were stranded inside their isolated houses.?
Calling them the state's own navy, the Kerala CM had announced that the fuel expenses they had incurred will be reimbursed along with a daily remuneration of Rs 3000 for them.?
The fishermen had, however, turned it down and said the money should be used for flood relief.
