The Supreme Court instructed the Uttar Pradesh government to upgrade the Special Investigation Team which is probing the Lakhimpur Kheri violence by including high-level officers, as per TNN.?
The top court wanted names of IPS officers in the UP cadre but not from the state for being included.
The UP government replied that it can appoint a retired judge to monitor the SIT probe. This is in regard to the Lakhimpur Kheri incidents - mowing down of 4 farmers, lynching of 3 accused and death of a journalist. They took place on October 3.
UP government's counsel senior advocate Harish Salve said that there was no problem with the apex court appointing a former judge to oversee the probe.?
A bench headed by Chief Justice NV Ramana which had Justices Surya Kant and Hima Kohli said, "Now, we have a lot of freedom for a retired SC or HC judge. Let us see."?
On November 8, the Supreme Court had expressed that it was not happy with the way the probe was being handled.?
The next hearing is on November 17.?
Eight people, including four farmers, were killed in the violence on October 3.?
?"Police had demanded a 14-day remand of Ashish. They have got a three-day remand from October 12 to 15," senior prosecution officer (SPO) SP Yadav told reporters.?
?The police remand was granted by Chief Judicial Magistrate Chintaram, with the condition that Ashish Mishra will not be harassed and his lawyer will remain present during interrogation, Yadav said.?
?Earlier, a court had sent Ashish Mishra to 14-day judicial custody.?
Mishra had appeared before the Police to record his statement, after missing another summons deadline.
Mishra had reached the Crime Branch office in Lakhimpur Kheri along with his lawyer Awadhesh Singh and Sadar MLA Yogesh Verma, while accompanied by his supporters.?
