It is literally the dawn of a new era in Mizoram, as the state is all set to have a new chief minister after three decades.?
Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) party chief Lalduhoma is set to take over from Zoramthanga, who has held the Chief Minister's post since 1998.
On Monday, ZPM captured power for the first time in Mizoram?by delivering a crushing defeat to the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF), winning 27 seats in the 40-member Assembly.
The ZPM, which was formed six years ago through a merger of six smaller outfits, ended decades of rule by the MNF and the Congress in the northeastern state.
ZPM chief Lalduhoma, an IPS officer-turned-politician, retained his Serchhip seat, defeating his nearest MNF rival, J Malsawmzuala Vanchhawng, by a margin of 2,983 votes.
Lalduhoma began his career as Principal Assistant to the Chief Minister of Mizoram in 1972 and served in the post for five years.
In 1977, Lalduhoma cleared the UPSC exam and qualified for IPS.
After being initially posted in Goa in 1982, Lalduhoma was made the security in-charge of the then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi.
Two years later, in 1984, he resigned from IPS and joined politics with Congress but tasted defeat in his electoral debut the same year.
Lalduhoma's political journey with the Congress party ended in 1986 when he was a Lok Sabha MP. In 1988, Lalduhoma became the first MP to be disqualified from the Parliament under the anti-defection law.
Lalduhoma then went on to Mizo National Union (MNU) and later Zoram Nationalist Party.
Lalduhoma was elected to the Mizoram Legislative Assembly from Ratu in the 2003 election, and in the 2018 election, his party joined a coalition - the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM).
In 2020, Lalduhoma faced disqualification as a member of the Legislative Assembly for violating the anti-defection law. But, he made a triumphant comeback by winning the by-election for the Serchhip seat in 2021.
