October 22 is the start of Durga Puja 2020 in Kolkata. 5 days when the city is in a different zone altogether. This time, of course, COVID casts a dark shadow over the festivities but don't expect the enthusiasm to be dampened for the average Kolkatan.?
Now unlike most Kolkatans, or Bongs, my obsession is not much as far as the Pujas are concerned. It could be because I have lived outside Kolkata for nearly half my life or because it just not appeal to me. Whatever be the reason, it is why I have never come home for Durga Puja even once ever since I moved to Delhi back in 2011.?
So the last Durga Puja I attended in Kolkata was in 2010. Now, in 2020, by a twist of fate, I shall be in the city during the festival. No, it was not planned but since March our offices have been shut and we have been working from home. So in June, once flights resumed, I came home. The plan was that whenever offices do open, I will go back.?
So after 2010, I am all set for another Durga Puja at home, albeit a less festive one. But it is not the only distinction. Rewind to 2010. I was 24, had just given my University finals for a Masters Degree in Journalism and Mass Communication and the future looked uncertain. Oh, and Sachin Tendulkar was still playing. One other important fact, there was no COVID threat.?
Fast forward to 2020. I am 34, working in a reputed media house and am home due to a pandemic for almost the last 4 months and possibly till the end of the year from the way things stand. The COVID threat is holding us hostage. Oh and yes, Sachin has retired 7 years back. The world is a different place. Yes, was single them, am single now, but a lot has happened in the last 10 years.?
But I digress. Durga Puja is coming. Low key plans have been made unlike 2010 when we would go all out. Yes, while I am not obsessed, it does not prevent me from chilling with friends those 5 days. Now it shall be done with proper precautions.?
So less than a month to go, the clock is ticking. Kolkata, Durga Puja and COVID are in an entangled love triangle and I am there to witness it. ?
