The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has fielded Majid Ali as its candidate for the Saharanpur constituency in Uttar Pradesh for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Ali is the brother of Bollywood actor and producer Kamaal R Khan, better known as KRK.
60-year-old Ali is also the richest candidate in eight constituencies of Uttar Pradesh that are going to the polls in the first phase on April 19.
According to his election affidavit, Ali has declared total assets of around Rs 160 crores.
His business includes real estate, mining and quarrying, food products, manufacturing of wearable apparel (clothing line) and others. Some of his companies include Avicenna Stones And Minerals Private Limited, Todarpur Agro Products Private Limited, Majid Overseas Private Limited, Forevision Estates Private Limited and several other firms.
While this is the first time Ali is contesting to the Lok Sabha, he is not a newcomer in electoral politics.
He started his political journey with the BSP in 2009 and contested and won the panchayat elections in 2016.
In 2017 Ali unsuccessfully contested the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls from the Deoband seat. Ali had joined Chandra Shekhar¡¯s party Azad Samaj Party in 2021 but soon returned to BSP.
Saharanpur is the BSP's sitting seat which was won by Haji Fazlur Rehman in 2019 when the party was in an alliance with the SP.
In 2024, Ali is up against eight others including BJP candidate Raghav Lakhanpal and Congress's Imran Masood.
Eight parliamentary constituencies -- Saharanpur, Kairana, Muzaffarnagar, Bijnor, Nagina-SC, Moradabad, Rampur and Pilibhit -- will vote in the first phase on April 19.
According to the Election Commission, the notification for the first-phase polls was issued on March 20 and March 27 was the last date for filing of nominations.
Scrutiny of nominations will be done on March 28 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is March 30.
