They say that blood is thicker than water, but this doesn't seem to be applicable in the cut-throat world of politics, where it is not uncommon to see families pitted against each other on opposite sides of the political spectrum.?In Haryana, which goes to the polling booth on 5th October to elect its new assembly, the electoral picture is slowly shaping up.
In one of the most high-profile election battles, the Tosham assembly seat in Bhiwani district of Haryana will see the grandchildren of former Chief Minister Bansi Lal competing against each other for BJP and Congress.
The Congress candidate for Tosham is Anirudh Chaudhry, a former treasurer of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Anirudh Chaudhry is the son of Ranbir Singh Mahendra, whose father Bansi Lal was a three-time Chief Minister of Haryana. He is up against his cousin and former MP Shruti Choudhry, who has been fielded by the BJP.
Shruti Choudhry, on the other hand, is the daughter of BJP leader Kiran Choudhry and Bansi Lal's other son, the late Surender Singh.
Kiran Choudhry held the Tosham seat as a Congress MLA from 2005 to 2024 before switching to BJP in June, after which she became a Rajya Sabha MP. She will be replaced by her daughter Shruti Choudhry as the BJP candidate.
Another 'family feud' in Haryana will be in the Dabwali seat in Sirsa, where former Deputy Prime Minister of India, Devi Lal's grandson, Aditya Devi Lal, is the INLD candidate, and his great-grandson Digvijay Singh Chautala is the JJP candidate.
In Rania, the INLD has fielded Devi Lal's great-grandson Arjun Chautala, while Devi Lal's son Ranjit Singh Chautala has said he will contest as an Independent.
