The rain and subsequent flood situation in Bengaluru is only getting worse and the fear is that the worst is yet to come, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast ¡°isolated heavy to very, very heavy rainfall¡± for the next five days over south Karnataka including the capital city.
On Thursday, Several areas including BTM Layout, HSR Layout, Anugraha Layout, and Madiwala localities were left flooded due to the overflowing of the Madiwala lake.
Several areas, including the Kempegowda International Airport (KIAL), were waterlogged following heavy rainfall in the city.
The waterlogging at the road to the airport made it difficult for the passengers to reach the airport. The passengers were seen being ferried on a tractor outside the airport.
Following the heavy rain, a man was killed due to a short circuit in a house that was flooded, in the Konappana Agrahara limits of Bengaluru.
The Karnataka capital has been witnessing heavy rainfall since Monday which has caused a flood-like situation in many parts of the city.
Adding to the troubles of Bengaluru residents is the increase in the number of buildings that have collapsed or are on the verge of falling down.
A residential building at Kamala Nagar had tilted dangerously late on Tuesday night while the sidewall of a house in Nagarathpet collapsed on Wednesday morning following torrential rain.
As the building started tilting in Kamala Nagar near Shankar Nag Bus Stand on Tuesday night, residents ran out of their houses for safety leaving behind their belongings.
Karnataka Excise Minister K Gopalaiah, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Chief Commissioner Gaurav Gupta along with the team of fire and emergency services personnel rushed to the spot following the incident.
A week ago, a house had tilted in Kasturi Nagar and a residential quarters on the premises of Bangalore Milk Union Limited (BAMUL) came down crashing due to heavy downpour. In both incidents, no casualties were reported as people were evacuated well in time.
On Wednesday, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) authorities demolished a building in Mahalakshmi Layout limits as its foundation had collapsed, leaving it tilted due to the heavy rains.
This building was one of the 26 structures which were identified as vulnerable by the authorities.??
