Maharashtra has recorded 8,623 new coronavirus cases and 51 deaths, with 987 cases being reported from state capital Mumbai.
The state reported more than 8,000 new COVID-19 cases on the fourth straight day on Saturday which took the caseload in the state to 21,46,777.
The death toll in the state due to the pandemic reached 52,092.
Lockdown in eastern Maharashtra's Amravati city was extended by one week. Weekend lockdown is also in place in Nagpur, Buldhana and Yavatmal in the region.
"The virus has now spread to most of the cities and districts. For instances, in Akola division which today reported 1,364 cases, all its parts including Akola district, Akola city, Amravati district and city, Yavatmal, Buldhana and Washim have reported coronavirus infections in three digits," an health official said.
Fresh Covid-19 cases are showing a worrying upward trend over the past one week, with the country reporting a single-day rise of 16,752 cases in the last 24 hours taking the overall tally to 1,10,96,731 on Sunday.
The rise is the highest in this month. The positivity rate has been rising gradually, which is now at 1.48 per cent. As per the Ministry's data, there are 1,64,511 active cases at present after 11,718 patients were discharged in a day.
Meanwhile, 113 more deaths were recorded in the last 24 hours, taking the overall toll to 1,57,051, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said.
