A black coloured oil-like substance has been noticed in the Iril river of Manipur yesterday morning.?
This follows an incident of heavy fuel leakage from Leimakhong Power Station, Imphal West District from last month, in what has been considered 'foul play'.
What is this substance, and how did it land up in a river of the state??
Iril River runs through the village of Litanpokpi Mairelpat near Dolaithabi Dam. Villagers noticed the oil-like substance floating in the river early in the morning.?
As videos circulated on social media garnered attention, key police officers and pertinent government officials, along with Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) staff, swiftly arrived at the location for examination and gathered samples for testing.?
In response, the Dolaithabi Dam was closed down immediately to stop the spread of the unknown substance.?
In addition to serving as the primary water source for multiple valley-based water supply plants, the river's water is utilised by local residents for both domestic and agricultural needs.?
Officials said that the substance seems to be concentrated in a specific portion of the Iril river.?
Representatives from PHED and the Directorate of Environment & Climate Change have gathered water samples from various locations, which are currently undergoing further testing in respective laboratories.?
As of now, initial tests indicated that all parameters of the sample fall within permissible limits for untreated water.?
Nevertheless, if necessary, the samples will undergo additional testing in advanced laboratories.?
Meanwhile, a plea is extended to residents in nearby villages to stay vigilant and promptly report any suspicious incidents to government authorities.?
This incident follows close on the heels of a 'sabotage' in Manipur reported on January 11, over a heavy fuel leakage from the Leimakhong power station.?
Miscreants caused a spillage of heavy oil, leading to a flow of pollutants into nearby rivers.?
They also indulged in theft and property damage.
