The Delhi Police have registered an FIR against some unknown persons for attempting to enter the all-women Miranda House College in the national capital during a Diwali Mela event there.
The suo moto action was taken after a video went viral on social media showing a few men can be seen scaling the wall to enter the college.
"Men climbing over the walls to get into Miranda House during an open fest. What followed was horrible. Cat-calling, groping, sexist sloganeering and more. Men entering safe spaces to harass gender minorities is nothing new, but they out do themselves every time," a twitter user who posted the video of the incident said.
"Due to huge crowd gathering at a Diwali Mela organised in Miranda House College in North Campus on October 14, gates were closed by college admin. Some students tried scaling the walls but were prevented. The program went peacefully No formal complaint received so far," DCP North Delhi said in a statement.
Delhi Commission for Women has issued a notice to the city police and Delhi University's Miranda House over the incidents.
Taking note of the incident, DCW chief Swati Maliwal questioned the security arrangements made by the college during the event.
"Men are climbing walls to forcibly enter Diwali fest at Miranda House, one of the most popular colleges of Delhi. The women have made serious allegations of molestation and harassment. We are sending notices to Delhi Police and college administration. How did this hooliganism happen? What were the security arrangements in place?" she said in a tweet.
Students shared multiple videos on social media in which some men are seen purportedly scaling the boundary wall, roaming around on the campus and raising slogans.
?Students alleged many attendees entered classrooms and responded rudely.
"Men from Ramjas College with their sexist slogan, 'Ramjas ka Naara hai, Miranda poora hamara hai'. (Ramjas' slogan, all of Miranda is ours. Despicable," a student said.
While police said no complaint has been received so far, they responded to the social media videos saying "some students (3-4) were trying to enter the college", but they were stopped and the October 14 Diwali programme remained "incident-free".
