When three youths were playing tennis near a jail in Kolkapur, it did not appear to be much. But after taking a closer look, it was discovered that these young men from Pune were trying to lob tennis balls filled with ganja into the Kalamba jail.?
This happened on November 10; the accused drew suspicion when a police constable saw them.?
They were taken to the local police station where they admitted to the balls being filled with marijuana. Three of the balls that were cut open had ganja in them, as per a TOI report,?
They said that the balls were meant to be given to an undertrial inmate called Shahu Shaikh.?
Shaikh is in jail on an attempt to murder charge. Shaikh's brother knows all three of the young men?
The accused are Vaibhav Kothari (24), Sandesh Deshmukh (20), and Amit Paygude (25). They have been booked under the NDPS Act. They were released after giving a personal surety.?
The accused reached Kolhapur by car on Tuesday morning. The police say they are probing who brought them to the city and hosted them there.?
The cops are also probing whether the trio was part of any gang and whether any jail staff was involved in this. During a search in jail, the police have also found a mobile phone and a SIM card. A probe is on to find out who was using the mobile.
This is certainly a unique way to send ganja into a jail, of all places.?
