On Saturday, a National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team undertook a spirited rescue operation wherein they evacuated 127 people from a Gujarat school following the rise in water levels due to heavy rain caused by Cyclone Biparjoy.
But what has caught everybody's attention are the striking visuals that show NDRF personnel braving knee-deep water to carry infants covered in clothes, employing inventive measures like empty cement bags to protect them from the rain.
A footage shows that a rescuer, taking an infant out of the school wrapped in an empty cement bag, carries the baby across the knee-deep water before handing it over to a family member waiting in an area with low water levels.
?Therein, it can also be seen that NDRF personnel are holding the hands of older children to guide them through the waterlogged spot, apart from bringing out the belongings of families taking refuge at the school.?
Amidst the disarray caused by the cyclonic storm's landfall, individuals in the adjacent areas to the coast were provided shelter in Rupan Bandar School in Devbhumi Dwarka district.
However, when the area became inundated, it was decided to shift the people from the spot to another school in the vicinity.
As per media reports, 82 men, 27 women, 15 children and three nursing staff were moved out of the school.??
?The rescue operation demonstrated the steadfastness of the NDRF personnel who secured the safety of the affected individuals amidst tough conditions.??
Cyclone Biparjoy landed near Jakhau Port in Gujarat, with wind speeds varying from 125 kmph to 140 kmph.?
The cyclonic movement led to heavy rainfall and strong winds, which further caused considerable damage across the territory.?
Almost 524 trees and electric poles were reportedly uprooted, impacting the power supply to about 1,000 villages.
Following its landfall, Cyclone Biparjoy gradually weakened and is predicted to cut further into a deep depression by evening.?
It should be noted that the timely action and preparedness by the authorities, including the NDRF, lessened the impact of the very severe cyclone in the region, thereby averting probable loss of lives and property in the impacted areas.
