Along with the widespread adoption of digital payments, fraud has also increased.?One common scenario for online payments is when using ride-hailing services like cabs.?Recently, a new scam involving 'fake screenshots' has emerged, and it's something we need to be cautious about. Recently, a man took to social media to share his experience of being scammed by an Uber driver who presented a fake screenshot and charged double the fare.
The man shared his experience on Reddit about his Uber ride from Delhi¡¯s Indira Gandhi International Airport to his home in the city.
According to the Reddit user, he and his father arrived in Delhi around 10:30 pm on March 24. He booked an Uber through the app, which displayed a fare of Rs 340. However, upon reaching their destination, the Uber driver demanded Rs 648.
Since he was charged almost double, he asked to see the screen displaying the payment for confirmation.
The driver showed him a screenshot indicating the fare was indeed Rs 648. The driver attributed the increase to waiting charges.
Though still suspicious, the man chose to avoid confrontation late at night and paid quietly. Before leaving, he clicked a picture of the Uber driver¡¯s phone screen showing the payment details. Upon reviewing the photo later, he noticed significant discrepancies ¨C his name was misspelled, and there were two Uber app icons visible.
Convinced he had been deceived, the man contacted Uber customer care. They informed that the driver reported collecting only Rs 127.48.
The user urged readers to exercise caution when using ride-hailing apps and only pay the amount displayed on their app.?
The driver likely used a fake app to display incorrect payment information.
Another tactic he employed was to engage? in excessive conversation during the ride to distract the customers, the Reddit user concluded.
People in the comments section agreed that he was tricked by the fake screenshot scam, where drivers use fake apps to overcharge.
One person commented, ¡°Exactly the same happened with me. The thing was I chose online payment and the driver showed me the spoof screen. I caught him and he just fled.¡±
